1. i guess only in kolkata, you can find food stall which sells fish and rice at Rs. 20. i had gained 8kg weight but now i have lost. :D

2. All multiplexes have 50% discount on movie tickets for saturday/sunday morning shows. sometimes they have special offer of 50% discount on popcorn+coke. so good combo to catch each movie at less expense for office goers at every weekend.

3. travelling in bus is almost free. last time bus conductor charged Rs. 6.5 for travelling 18 kilometers in public bus. I am not going to talk about condition of bus. :)

4. salt lake city: this newly designed township may be overtly expensive there but the best place to live. distance between offices or malls or eateries is < 5 km. clean road is its USP.

5. goddess worship - here people worship only goddess. people believe more in feminine power.

1. intercity volvo bus service : the best thing about this bus is that its large glass-window allows you to have a completely different view of same city which happens to be very crowded.

2. tempature at night : i use blanket every night where as rest india is either too hot or too cold.

3. right mix of indians at workplace: if you go to Kolkata, you will find 80% bengalis. go to Delhi, 80% north indians. go to chennai, 90% south indians. but here you can expect indian diversity.

4. beer shops at every corner: it may be little controversial to announce as a good point but if you wish to grab few beers with your friends, then you don't have to walk more than 100 meters to find a beer shop near by your flat. Indirectly this fact proves that major consumer of wine and beer is educated class.

5. food: equal probability to find north and south delicacies at any place

as a young man, he started his career as a small cereal food-grain seller in village. he didn't stop there. he made himself a reputed cereal food-grain business man in village and became known even in surrounding villages. once he told me that keeping secrecy of critical situation is very important to seal a good business deal. how he managed to buy a big mango orchid at cheap price from a landlord who urgently needed large sum. never invite competition when you are buying. he made fortune but at same time lost in bad deals too. Inspite he was educated up to class seven, he gave top priority to quality education. his personal drive for better education inspired many villagers to take education. after working for few years, finally he established a village high school so that more students can get education up to matriculation atleast. when he died, a large number of people from various villages irrespective of caste or personal conflict, came and attended funeral rite. grand-dad taught me one thing. 'making difference in society matters most. ' he is my hero.

terrorist Kasab has become more popular in India after his arrest in hotel Taj blast . everyday i find headline news related to daily activities of Kasab in top newspapers. most of news are completely non-sense such as 'he is facing mosquito problem in cells' or 'he is regretting today' or 'he wants to go to macca' but his statements have become center of attention. why is this animal still alive when it is very clear that he killed many top police officials ? it is complete shame to read or listen someone who mastreminded to kill whole hostel taj guests. why is the govenment taking more time to understand his case and his link to terror camps ? nothing new information is confirmed to come out of this case. It makes no point to make same noise to grab attention of other nations to pressurise pakistan for its global terror agenda. when someone is firing bullets on our house, we don't call neighbours. first we shoot.

if the five-judge Bench favours the right to discard every candidate, our democracy will become more meaningful. The present system under Rule 49 (O) is of no help to anyone. In fact, it is contrary to the system of secret ballot as the voter has to identity herself to register unwillingness to vote. Negative votes also must be counted and if the majority prefers none of the candidates, re-election should be conducted barring rejected candidates. It’s the only way to clean our system.

some local moral sena decided to teach moral values and indian-ness on mass scale in Bangalore. so, what could be best occasion once a year to start their goondagiri ? Valentine Day!!! specially gals/females were tortured, smacked and humiliated if they were found with their boy friends. each such episode we had live on national television but moral sena had no fear of being thrashed by police lathi. alas!!! a political goonda declared his nation-wide mass-thrashing hate-drive in public, still he is scot-free with no police questioning. no major political party came forward with strong statement to protect the freedom of people. this situation was exactly similar to when north indians were thrown out of mumbai by MNS in recent time. my point is not to teach these goonda a lesson on Indian culture but i want to look at an event in broad perspective to understand ''why does such bullshit happen when we boast of good political leaders, courts and more aware citizens ?''

need for one standard for all SAP projects

currently every individual SAP project in a big IT firm has its own project specific naming convention and code quality standard. if an IT firm has 20 SAP projects running then 20 different project standards are prepared by each manager inspite all 20 projects are involved techanically and functionally in same technology. i explain why we DON'T need different project standards for same technology. how does one common standard applicable across all projects in a big company improve the desired level of code quality, code readability for all SAP developers in a company and easy adaptability of developer across all projects without wasting 2 -3 days reading same documents? i have worked in four SAP projects and observed various contradictory code quality assurance standard.

(1) in my previous project, use of 'field-symbol' is not allowed. although in my present project, use of 'field-symbol' is highly recommended to replace 'work-area' and data manupulation in internal table without 'modify' statement. utility of this tool is immense other than stated two ovious scenarios.

(2) in one project, it is ok to read an internal table using 'Binary Search' always and religiously. but it doesn't make sense to read an internal table using 'Binary Search' for once or twice as 'Binary Search' requires 'Sorting' which itself is very time consuming. in such case, linear search is good performance wise if requirement is not beyound 4 times or read inside loop itself.

(3)another contradictory thing i noticed that one project allows 'modify' satement with 'where' clause for internal table inside loop while other project rates it as bad coding style as modify statement works in linear fashion starting from index 1 to n which unnecessarily increases record (internal table) processing time. so, how do they suggest to modify internal table ? take one scenario: based on outer looped internal table1, if one has to modify the content of internal table2. then sort the internal table2 outside loop based on conditional fields. read this internal table2 inside loop assigning field-symbol based on conditional fields. if it finds a record then simply change the content of field-symbol which gets reflected in internal table2. so, basically one replaces linear processing by sorting+binary search. latter is good performance wise if records are in great number in production system.

(4)one project allows to modify database table in 'user-exit/BAdi' directly where as other project doesn't allow it without 'update perform/update function' module because it violates the concept of 'All or None' database update. as previous approach will lead to inconsistent database if respective standard transaction fails in middle of processing before executing 'commit' statement.

(5)one rediculous thing was-one project didn't prefer 'inner join' because QA guy feared that it might lead to data loss in complex situation. priceless!!!

bottom line is that each has developed one specific standard QA list which reflects limitation of one's knowledge. sad part is this kind of industry practice at project level is common everywhere. one effective solution can be that only few selected efficient techanical experts of company should set the standard of code quality for all projects. It will easy to implement best industry practices in SAP technology as ignorance of latest update in technology as well as lack of wider exposure are reason for this inconsistency.

I am not able to appreciate the benefits of following different naming conventions for different projects in a same company. as far as functionality and performance of codes are concerned, it is not going to alter anything. so, sticking to one standard for naming will enhance more standarisation of code maintenance. when client buys a specific namespace from SAP then accordingily the naming can be changed while maintaining rest things intact. as for example, if a client wants that all custom developments shud start with 'PPP' initial then what one has to do is just add this initail 'PPP' to custom name using already fixed one naming convention.

terrorists succeed in planting bombs and we keep cleaning bomb sites with tearful eyes. i am fed up with daily news of blasts and its aftermath or any consolatory statement of PM. i am interested in real actions like "how many those bastards have been gunned down by Indian police ". i am interested in whether our national stand on terrorism is as obvious as "if you dare to do it, we have enough bullets waiting for your head". i am interested in our government's attitude and confidence such as "our guns will negotiate with you". it's high time to take inspiration from China, Russia and USA. any threat to security, these countries talk more with their tanks. i don't want to live under the fear of being killed anywhere with no trace of my finding. today a perosn gets more calls from home not to go to malls or open markets. i personally avoid to come out of home if it is 15th august or 26th january or occasion of sensitive religious festivals. Thank God! these are national holidays otherwise casualities would be many fold. as a nation, first act of our boldness should be to make the number of all prison serving terrorists linked with bomb blasts to zero. we should be least interested in keeping 100 terrorists alive in prison rather than determined to bring in 200 more if they spoil our sound night sleep. because "no motherfucker can decide the fate of my life with press of one button."

finally dying post-offices re-inveted themselve to be in biz atleast by providing address verification services to IT industries and mobile service operators!!! why doesn't government sell Indian postal establishment to any private body who can make it one of the largest and finest integrated courier facilities of world ? govenmental postal system can work with city private courier agencies to deliver packages in villages as it will solve my problem to send a courier to my village home as well as government can make some profit if they are so busy to not think of re-energising the dead postal biz. few years ago, Indian railways sytem was on verge of financial bankrupcy but after few strokes of development and good management techniques, it is churning out 10K crores pure profit per year . same positive development can be achieved with postal system if it doesn't loose its focus on its core area of business like postal/package/money delivery rather than doing petty works for other companies.

can we have a postal minister like Lalu Prasad who can make it possible ?

this is not a story of mine but it is about my friend Nishant and his quest to find a perfect match for his marraige. just six months ago he decided to settle down and wished to have a happy marraige life with an extremely gorgeous gal of his age. he did lots of homework like 'which is the best matrimonial site which has genuine profiles as well as it has profiles which can match with his standard.', 'what's the charge for a matrimonial advertisement of specific number of words or specific space in an individual national newspaper for three editions.', 'What kind of proper words should be used to convey his precise set of parameters for his match'. the decision to marry at young age of 24 yrs (next month he would be 25 yrs old) is his self analysis to find real happiness in life. he explains to me...most of time we spend our precious time to find a girl friend which is basically below par of our status (in terms of IIT degree as well as income) that causes regret later on even if we get that kind of girl friend. where as gorgeous gals don't even think of us as we lack social contact with them to continue any kind of relationship which she deserves to have. what is the end result...we just end up spoiling our time for useless purpose like searching/watching a gal in forum mall or cursing almighty to be unfair with us. so, the best route for find a right gal for talented guys like us is arranged marraige. being 5'11" tall, slim, IIT educated guy, currently earning only 10 lacs per annum, he has firm belief to get proposal from only exceptionally fair gal from high profile family. with prospect of not losing any potential beauty queen, he relaxed his caste criteria for his match after having a long serious persuasive discussion with his mom. but what makes him sad after giving a 10K ad in newspaper and having a 5k profile at matrimonial site, he has received interests only from beautiful gals but not from single extremely beautiful gal. he is not able to understand why an average gal (she may be enough beautiful for others like me.) sends her profile inspite of he has clearly mentioned height:5'6", age:24 yrs or below and excellent look for his match. what he does is only three things...he reads her profile...he makes fun of her foolishness to get noticed by him...he deletes her mail. he has rejected 50 profiles ranging from an mba grad from top college to software professional earning equivalent salary at elite firms. his precise set of beauty parameters has amazed and little shocked his mom and sis. Once he had a fight with his sis when he said a gal 'average looking' who was 'extremely gorgeous' acording to his sis. rest family members as well as me have good fun time to discuss about his marraige plan and we are not sure to predict when this guy will finally find his right match. moral of story: if you are an extremely beautiful gal then watch out these guys.

when a professional leaves his present organisation for next company, he drafts a thanking mail with lots of manufactured (may be real) emotional and nostalgic feelings he had experienced while working in various projects with various teams and he sends to all members of his present as well as past projects. what does this courtesy mail leave an impact on employees who get this mail? do we get emotional as this guy is leaving us ? does HR team see an infectious virus being sent by a out-going employee in the form of a thanking mail ? ok. let me tell you...how an employee reacts after reading a 'Good Bye' mail as this mail directly motivates them also to say 'Good Bye'...if that out-going employee is his friend then he will inquire about the offer he got and he will request him to refer his resume when he joins there...otherwise he will also start looking for a better opportunity in term of salary because someone having same experience as his own are getting better package in the market then why he should be left doing work at lower salary in his present company. many times this mail left many employees in bad taste as well as demotivated as they missed to grab that more-paying job. so what happens...one 'Good Bye' mail motivates next three or five 'Good Bye' mails directly or indirectly. from organisational perspective, this practice is no way doing any good.

every recruitment process has one last HR round to qualify. recruitee is sure of being asked same boring and crap questions to test so-called intregrity, trust and professionalism of candidate which basically tests nothing rather than it is a small feel-good chit-chat session with a candidate. what if one is disqualified based on it. blame guy or blame HR ?

Q. why do you want to join our company ? => does HR person want to listen manufactured good points about their company ? What does HR person expect from a candidate to say ? let suppose he is looking for change of job only for monetary increment then what's the problem HR person has got? to retain good employees or to absorb new employees, it is problem of company...it is not the responsibilty of an employee to stay inspite he deserves better.

Q. are you happy with your present work/company? => how it is going to matter whether a candidate is happy or unhappy with his company as long as he is proving his mantle or expertise in his area of work? why the hell anybody will say that he is unhappy with present company to invite more questions about his style of working rather he will choose to cut down next question by saying 'i am happy but i want to be happier if i join your firm.'

Q. if you get a better offer while working in our company, would you leave our company? => if anybody who is staying with a company inspite of getting better prospect from another company, is fool. i don't think anyone will use above line to reply to HR person to lose his prospect with certainity.

Q. why do you want to join software firm ? => why the hell, company is bothered for reasons behind a candidate's personal choice to work in his preferred industry ? what matters most is whether he is doing good.

Q. where do you see yourself in our company after five years ? => is a candidate going to stay for next 5 years on the basis of that he has made a statement like he would like to see himself as a manager ? does his answer worth anything good for a company ?

i along with Vijay Gupta decided to try beer. we went silently to a beer shop beside known Punjabi Dhaba. took a kingfisher mild beer...wrapped in newspaper...put it in a black bag. we were back to room. we were not sure about how we should take it...neat or with water or with cold drink. point was...we didn't want to intoxicate ourselves. finally we decided to go for Spirit. drink composition was: one part of beer and two parts Spirit. i had three drinks but Gupta couldn't complete one because of some kind of intoxication started in his head. poor guy!!! :)

last night i was at Patna junction waiting for Gareeb Rath, i saw a guy wearing a t-shirt with a line 'I go to gym everyday.'. when i re-looked at his size, he was just 180 kg with funny fat belly!!! i guess.
t-shirt with a punch line is rage as they find it kool to grab some eyeballs. there is some subtle rules regarding what words should be written on t-shirt. if t-shirt has a line like 'I am a good boy.' people who see anyone wearing this t-shirt will think...he is some kind of jerk or classic idiot or mock him to death. if a line is ' I am a bad boy.' then it will have completely different impact...the same people will find him kool and full of attitude. point is...more bad is more good. designers have been more crazy when it comes to write words on female t-shirts. like 'what you are staring at ?', 'fresh milk', 'mango', 'twins', 'hold me', blah blah...i am running out of my database. punch-line with double meaning is more common but what hits harder is some Knockout lines like 'Talk is cheap until you hire a lawyer.', 'Save water. Bath together.', ’save water, drink neat’ with a whiskey bottle printed.

i found this one priceless. t-shirt having printed words like 'road to heaven' with a bold arrow pointing downward.

arranged marriage

why does someone wish to get fooled by love marriage with average-looking-average-rich girl friend for sake of belief that it will last long and they will die happily? ( phew!!! ) where as arranged marriage still offers better prospect for 90% of Indians. it's vice-versa true for gals also. finding a girl friend and searching for potential life partner are two completely different things. there are lots of smart guys who don't mix these two together. for girl friend, you know better what you need and for life partner, parents know better. if parents readily agree with your choice then it's great. i know one good example...my friend's friend confessed his wish to a gal working with him in same project. she replied she would marry someone who earns 10 lacs per annum. well, his salary is below half of her expectation. what impressed me was clearity of her mind. she knows...her parents will find someone what she expects. our basic social framework offers what you deserve best and it will also make your mom be proud mother of obedient son/daughter.

fork vs hand

if i try to eat bone-meat using fork then i would end up making lots of noises on plate which always invite for unwanted attention from different tables. i usually scan menu silently for some tasty boneless otherwise i turn veggy when i am with group as it's easy to eat veggie food keeping clean fingers through out. i find it very amusing when some persons very patiently and smoothly use fork and spoon...fork in left hand and spoon in right hand...pressing fork on piece and using spoon to take out small bite. i just say to them 'dude, you look good'.

there is something subtle temptation about rice that i can't resist using my fingers. i won't say i am south Indian. but i find it more satisfying to my taste glands when i eat using my hand and licking my fingers at end. If I do it before a beautiful gal then it will surely turn her off at instant. this kind of temptation I think has been coded in my genes probably in most of Indians. it is said if we use more sensory organs during eating then body responds to food in better way. may be...feel of foods to fingers exposes more hidden taste glands in tongue. this doesn't mean I will give a try to my hand on noodles and maggie. some foods inherently need fork to enjoy them. whatever medical science claims to be true...i still find it not ok with hands in group when people are ready with fork and spoon. our age-old religious book tells 'food is enjoyed in private'.

bay of bengal

last weekends i went to three different sea beaches Mandarmani, Shankarapur and Dighah. all these are part of Bay of Bengal, 200KM near to Kolkata. when my friends suggested an idea to visit, i was relucant to go as i had never heard of these beaches and i thought these beaches would be some ugly looking small water resources. but i realised what i would have missed when i saw these beaches are infinite in dimension with huge pure water waves. the experience of taking dip in high flying sea waves and sleeping on wet sand when wave touches your feet were awesome. the best part of fun we had at Shankarapur beach. the rain started so heavily that we couldn't see. the unexpected heavy rainfall added extra joy and energy among us. we danced...shouted...ran in water...we thanked God for this wonderful evening.

the sad part of this tour is that these sea-beaches have no good many hotels and are not well connected to city. one night we had to survive on few eggs and samosa. it lacks facilities of some water sports, re-creational options and safety measures which we find at other places. Inspite of these places having good potential to be big attraction of tourism with strategy and investment, they are left as virgin spots. i promote these economically-unexplored places. who knows if it seeks attention of some genius entrepreneurs who take advantage of these places to make big business with less investment to provide goa-like experience. :)

MTV India is hosting lots of reality shows now-a-days. During one such reality show "on the job", channel asks one simple question.

Channel 9XM is full of some strange questions like...it shows a pic of Amitabh Bachchan.
Question is " who is this actor ?".
options:
a. Amitabh Bachchan
b. Sharukh Khan

all such questions have two common things.
first is...channel requests viewers to send sms with correct option on some four or five digits number. second is...you don't have to worry about the correct option of these questions. winners are supposed to get gold coins or dinner with star or some imaginary prizes.

how do you feel when one fine morning, you are in bathroom for nature's call and in the mean time someone keeps continuously pressing door bell button? there is no one inside to respond it except you? oh! for god sake, would you please stop pressing button ? i just thought of. if i shouted from my heavenly position, voice won't go beyond door into his ears. i need to wrap up. pressure won't work when you need to complete things especially when situation is as delicate as it is. phew!!! i need to calm down and concentrate to complete in next few minutes. few situations flashed before my eyes, i faced in public toilets like when i went inside then next guy always came and stand at door. he used to knock at door after every 30 seconds until you come out unfinished and enraged of course. i de-pressurized myself to feel lil comfortable and quickly run to door to find my old fat friend. f*** man!

i am habituated doing mathematical problems involving some widely known basic theories and facts. as the basic building blocks of mathematics are so common in use that i hardly think of how truthfulness of facts were proved. in spite of solving hundreds of problems based on circle area, i can't figure out how to prove the irrationality of pi. if i search for value of this constant, i may get value accurate up to 500 decimal places but it doesn't help me to know how pi was established as irrational entity. i look back and think of all mathematics books i read up to +12, i never crossed any basic book explaining proof of this truth. i searched the proof in wikipedia, but things explained is hard to grasp for me. handling pi is still tough.

is it hypothesis of geometry or rigorously proved that the area of rectangle is 'length x breadth' and volume of cuboid is 'length x breadth x height' ??? they interpreted dimensional features of real world and devised these two most basic form of tools to explain geometrical meaning of shape and size. it seems to be surprisingly unbelievable, some smart thinkers gave solid reasons for foundation of these formulae to calculate area and volume many centuries ago, in spite our course books fail to provide the logics how did mathematicians derived them. any kind of regular or irregular two dimensional geometrical shape is summation of n number of rectangles. any three dimensional figure is composed of n number of small cuboids. we explain everything in terms of these formulae but one one asks to explain these formulae.

If the boundaries of morality is getting pushed day by day then what restricts us to embrace those things today like same sex relationship what we will accept after 20 yrs down the line ? what kinds of cultural, moral and social developments will take place which redefine the subject in different light ? things are justified purely based on personal freedom and liking. the human values, relationship and way of thinking are function of time and space. so the outcome of any human action would be wrong or right is true only for particular frame of time and space. how does GOD punish a person who did something when it was considered amoral but died after 30-40 yrs when it is socially accepted? similarly someone who is involved in legalized prostitution in Thailand but stays in India . so with change of time or space or both , so-called amoral actions become justified.

why IT industries are under crunch ?

do IT professionals work 40 hours of work per 5 days on average ? Why do IT companies happily pay to their employees doing bench sitting for next 6 to 9 months before companies successfully bid projects ? In spite of being rolled in project, one has to wait doing nothing (called hidden bench sitting in my terms) for 2 to 3 weeks before one gets another assignment. The waiting for assignment often goes beyond 3 weeks depending upon how fast the onsite people are able to resolve technical as well as functionality issues of assignments with client's functional team. Off shore Project teams are unnecessarily over-crowed. Company charges money per hour of an employee to clients. Clients are happy in spite of paying to extra not-doing-anything man power working for them. Are clients fool enough not to understand the way their projects are handled by IT companies ?
It has got one simple answer: Overall Clients still find cheap to outsource. So, for IT companies, extra employees are profitable in terms of payments they receive from clients.
How a company can accommodate 10,000 new employees per year where markets are getting saturated ? Everything has got limit.
One day we find breaking news: IT industries are deep in financial crunch. slight decrease in Dollar value stirred entire IT industries. Hundreds of employees got fired on the basis of shrewed and tricky test exams to cut down the cost. Top managements are deeply concerned about future profits. today this dollar devaluation reduced bench strength in a company to almost zero. it is good for industries to restructure themselve to improve efficiency.

Few days back, a reputed Indian news channel AAJ TAK was broadcasting a short movie they shot by hidden camera to expose how indecent Indian males are when it comes to treating females in public places. They hired few beautiful models and sent them during daytime at public places like bus stops to study the behavior of males in presence of good looking girls. Result was obvious. Many stared at. Some didn't hesitate to make remark like 'sexy'. Some even took pictures by mobile phones. Few dared to approach and talked with her which is almost like a threat. The anchor of the show was discussing this downfall of male character with psychiatrist and experts. I appreciate the channel for taking up an issue and raising the point of safety of women at public places. My concern is the validity of experiment the channel conducted. Does the people sitting idle and smoking at public places reflect the nature of male in general ? These men are plenty in number at these places who were recorded by hidden camera. The kind of visual survey the channel conducted didn't include all kind of males in various other places like restaurants, shopping malls in totality. The show was on with experts' discussion about immature survey.

Freakonomics: Book Review

Levitt, author of the book said during interview of the New York Times Magazine on August 3, 2003 that given the right data I could figure out how to catch terrorists. It might seem absurd for an economist to dream of catching terrorists. But the author is sure. He believes that numbers don't lie. In spite of being economist, his approach to any particular problem does not involve any simple economics theory to reach any conclusion but what he is exceptionally excellent at is finding out the a story in the millions of data that no one else has found and framing of right questions to measure the effects of one variable on others that many top economists find it unmeasurable. In this book the author explores wide range of topics like cheating, corruption, abortion vs crime, parenting and racial discrimination. The books consists of six chapters and each chapter starts with question like "What do school teachers and Sumo wrestlers have in common ?", "Why do drug dealers still live with their moms ?", "What makes a perfect parent ?". It's amazing that the author explores each case by illustrating the various data and statistics he collected over years and explaining with logic the various patterns and scenarios he finds. He uses personal observation, intuition and freakish curiosity to remove one layer or more from the surface of modern life and seeing what is happening underneath. He gives interesting examples where conventional wisdom is often wrong like money alone wins elections, many police in city means drop in crime, capital punishment deters the hard core criminals, swimming pool in backyard is less dangerous to your children than gun, good parents means reading out books to your children and taking them out for museum regularly, naming of your children doesn't affect their career prospects, the advice you take from an expert like doctor or real estate agent is always good for you. The investigation of the author is for common people to know how the world really works. During analysis of any problem (page no-10), the author makes a point how to frame a good question to know the correlation between two factors-let's say them X and Y. It is possible that X causes Y or it is also possible that Y causes X or it may be that a third factor Z causes X and Y ? He takes few real life cases to explain this correlation-ship. Cities with a lot of murders also tend to have a lot of police officers. Unless you have sufficient data, it's hard to say it's number of murders that is causing increase in number of police or it's extra police that is causing murders in cities. While extending the concept of asking right question, during discussing about parenting and education (page no-163), author gives two similar looking questions to clarify the importance of making other parameters constant while determining the correlation-ship between factors X and Y in any scenario.
1. Does having a lot of books in your home lead your child to do well in school ?
2. Does a child with a lot of books in his home tend to do better than a child with no books ?
The author mentions that simply measuring children with a lot of books against children with no books as in question 1, the answer may not be meaningful. Perhaps the number of books in a child's home merely indicates how much money his parents make. What we really want to do is measure two children who are alike in in every way except one as in question 2 - in this case, the number of books in his home - and see if that one factor makes a difference in his school performance. That's why it is said - To ask an intelligent question is more difficult than to answer same. The book entices readers to think and question the way we accept our normal life. As this book offers explanations for why certain things went wrong or right but it lacks to provide the ways to improve situations if it goes wrong. I have few questions about the author's findings I wish the author would have explained in this book.

1. The author finds how the legalization of abortion in 1970s in USA contributed to massive crime drop of the 1990s after 20 yrs of its legalization. Can we replicate same success in other countries where still abortion is not legalized ? If not, then why ?
2. The author finds that capital punishment is not deterrent to hard core criminals then how to devise an unique system to deter criminal.

3. How to control the cheating by real estate agent/doctors/lawyers/sumo wrestlers ?

This book offers thrill of treasure-hunt when the author explores subjects and binds the readers to the last sentence of the book. This book establishes the fact that whatever be complexity of problem, one can understand only by use of common sense and keen observation.

I wish someday I would be working for myself. Where I would be responsible for my failure and success. The freedom to experiment and analyzing its consequences is a creative thrill. I am fascinated by anyone who has created any new business. The desire to work with entrepreneurs, I contacted three founders dealing with export of mangoes, online gift business and patenting and legal advices but I missed somewhere to impress them to take me as a part of their teams. Setback doesn't bring smile so it does in my case.

I never thought that life after campus would be so critical that I would feel helpless in spite of having a steady job. Where I find it so difficult to decide what I should be doing my rest of life ? I feel like I have lost my interest. I feel envy of my friends who enjoy their works where I do for sake of doing it. I think of which area is best suited for me ? and I have no idea. What I know...it should make me feel proud of whatever I do. I don't need to feel envy of other's profession. I want to feel that I am doing koolest job. This is the first challenge I have to overcome to move further.

I had heard that network/referral marketing had immensely improved the financial status of thousands of people associated with it. This concept grabbed my attention when I was in the final year of my engineering. It was rage among students who wanted to make millions overnight. How does this network marketing work ? How does it promise to pay you lots of money up to Rs. 6 lacs per week ? Is it kool to be in this business ? Out of curiosity I surfed some known websites of network marketing to read the whole story. These websites mention that the idea of network marketing was developed to sell consumable products directly to customers through a chain of thousands of people associate with it to save the money spent on useless/avoidable advertisements. The part of money saved on advertisements is shared among the associated members depending upon the number of members working below him and distribution ratio of members. These websites claim that after the huge success of selling of products through network marketing in USA, Canada, Singapore and some European countries, they decided to replicate same success in India.

I was impressed of such companies until I became aware of their hypocrisies and how they are misleading young guys when I closely noticed the guys working for two network marketing firms Ebiz and Qwest. These two firms have same rules for their members. The only difference is the amount of membership fees. Ebiz charges Rs 7000 where as Qwest charges Rs 30,000. I take the example of Qwest to explain the reality. One let say A who joins Qwest pays Rs 30,000 as one time membership fees. A can add only two new members let say B and C. B and C are termed as two nodes for A. Similarly B can add only two new members as well as C can. Thus the chain of members expands in this fashion. A will get the amount of Rs 11,500 if he successfully adds 3 and 3 members at his two nodes or in other words, node B and C each adds two new members.

what does Qwest sell through these members ? Gold coins of worth Rs 10,000. Who are the potential customers, the company is targeting to sell product to save the advertisement cost? The members are customers themselves. Have you ever watched an advertisement on T.V. for gold coins ? Obviously no.

Basically a person joins Qwest with the hope that with every addition of 6 members under him, he would be getting Rs. 11,500. If he manages to add 50 to 60 persons then he would be quite safe for the regular flow of integral multiple of Rs. 11,500. This is the only driving force (greed for easy money) that each member at any node keeps persuading a new person to join this firm to become so-called financially independent person. What is the success rate of a person having 50-60 members under him ? If a person doesn't get this figure within months, he is looser here. Simple mathematics. The chain for A is considered active to get Rs 11,500 when the ratio of total members at side X and side Y is in the range of 0.5 to 2.0 . So chances of A being inactive in spite of adding lots of members who pay Rs. 30,000 to Qwest ???

What is actually Qwest doing here ? Qwest takes the membership fees from each member and redistributes only a small portion of their money to those senior members who got multiple of 6 members under themselves. So in above diagram, A gets Rs. 11,500 when B, C, D, E, F, G joins under him. Qwest gets Rs. 2,10,000 as membership fees (A to G ). Qwest gives gold coins of worth Rs. 10,000 to each. So here, Qwest distributes amount Rs. 11,500+ Rs. 70,000 = Rs. 81,500. Qwest makes profit here without creating any value = Rs. 2,10,000 - Rs. 81,500 = Rs. 1,28,500. I have taken an ideal case to explain but in actual scenario Qwest makes profit in range of Rs. 1,00,000 for every addition of 7 members. Who is smarter, Qwest or members ?

when you visit their sites, you will surprised to see these companies are ISO certified and have won many awards. I don't know...does ISO validate the business model on ethics ground ? Qwest site features a group photograph of our finance minister P. Chidambaram with the CEO. I find it ridiculous. There are lots of such firms in India which are having their operation under the guise of social marketing. The government seriously needs to look into this fact.

A real talent hunt show or A fake stage show ?

Today reality shows have gripped entire TV channels. Every channel is hosting one or other kind of reality shows. Be it Indian Idol or SaReGaMaPa Pratham Vishwyudh or Voice of India or Jhalak Dikhala Ja or Little Champ and many more in pipe lines. Every channel is in competition to find next generation sensational singers like Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Shaan or sizzling dance couple. The concept of finding raw talent and at the same time making it viable business idea is great innovation. Old proverb: Necessity is the mother of Innovation. As viewers were bored of K-factor, SAAS-BAHU saga and same family-quarrels, the reality show generated immense interest among public. It gave fresh dose of gossips over dinner table. It increased the viewership and popularity of TV channels among the people. The TRP of show is sky high. Channel happy! . Participants happy!. Audience happy!. Everything seems to be going fine ? Does it look so nice and going well with the time ?

If we look and observe each reality show, format of each show is same.
1. Each participant is mugging a song and imitating the original singers. Some get applause like you have sung better than what original singers did with this song. Bravo!!! God bless you! (excessively used phrase by judges)
2. Junta decide the fate of participants through SMS voting. (Democracy rules!!!)
3. Film stars/Debutant actors are paying guest appearance to judge the quality of singing of participants. Our stars are multi-talented or marketing guru of channel using them to ruthlessly increase TRP ?
4. Judges quarrelling over points to back their favourite participants and sometimes they appeal for vote to junta so that real talents don't get eliminated. WOW!!! Guru-Shishy ka pyar :)
5. Participants who don't make into next round, receive tearful farewell. Judge goes on announcing that he would leave the SHOW if his/her favourite participant gets eliminated. Athough you will see the same judge cheering and clapping for other participant in next show as nothing he had promised to junta in previous show ;)
6. Entire film cast promoting film on the show. During one such promotion at popular reality show, one of the judges Himesh Rashamiya claimed-whoever promoted the film on this show became blockbuster. Good! I would request Ram Gopal Verma to promote his films on this show to get at least one HIT.

It's no doubt that these reality shows have large number of viewers. But with addition of bollywood-glamour and SMS voting, these shows have turned into mere money machines for channels. Recently top finalists of Voice of India had visited Lata Mangeshar on her birthday.
She said-' It's very easy to mug a song and copy original singer. If you try your own song then you will realise where you stand. If public voting decide "who is better singer" then what these highly paid judges do in shows ? ' She certainly meant that to find great singer the basic format of the competition has to be changed. One SMS vote costs RS 6. In the final round of the show, channel claims to get TEN crores vote . It means the one final show generates revenue of Rs. 60 crores only through SMS voting. Forget about the advertisements and ticket sales. The channels defend the SMS voting, saying any participant getting maximum votes among the public should get the chance. As he/she is more popular than their competitors so public will buy and listen his/her songs. I do agree. Then why don't they make the SMS voting toll free so that more public will vote to find great singer ? Why don't they make such restriction like one vote per mobile number or landlines number ? So that multiple voting by a single person can be controlled. Sometimes these SMS voting is state sponsored. Current example is the fierce voting rivalry between Prashant Tamang and Amit Paul in Indian Idol3 show. Their respective governments opened all their state telephone services free of cost for voting their candidates. Just imagine the way the budding singing talent is recognised. These shows have produced one dozen of finalists since last 3 years but only one finalist Abhijeet Sawant has came up with one album release. He has gained moderate success but rest are seen no where. Even judges of the shows are not so convinced to give break to their own Shishy. These idols have to go long way to prove themselves.

With epidemic rise in star/super stars visits on the show, the attention on the performance of the participants has shifted to the stars. Our bollywood stars start to act on the script to praise all participants with equal intensity. In one such show, Rani Mukherjee had requested that there should not be any elimination of participants because it was first day of her released movie- Laga Chunari me Daag. She didn't want any sorrow and requested to all to watch her movie. She is so kind hearted. Do we need our bollywood stars to make these reality shows more exciting ? American Idol show doesn't need any big hollywood stars to promote itself. Then why do the copies of American Idol show need bunch of stars at the cost of the spirit of show ? Don't kill the spirit of the game. Permanent judges are more qualified and better than guest judges.

Last important thing about these shows is tear factor. Indian TV viewers are very emotional. More you shed crocodile tears, more you will get public sympathy in terms of SMS votes. And TRP of show also goes high. One such interesting incident happened during the elimination round of Bathroom Singer show. One good looking gal was eliminated due to less voting. All participants were shedding tears and crying. They were hugging her like they didn't want her to go from the show. Judges of the show were almost tearful. They were shocked to death. Few moments passed. Bappi da came on stage. When he started with his hit Disco item. Then all were dancing on disco tunes. WOW!!! What is the need to stage fake drama ?

Historically the rise of new social thinkers, philosophers and inventors had generated controversy. They challenged the traditional thinking of society and dared to put their rational logic. As they were willed to create a more enlightened world so dark forces of society resisted it for their survival doubting the integrity of their creative works.

But this time, this history of controversy has repeated in bollywood. Controversy surrounded when Himesh Reshammiya became popular for his vocals which have the distinctive high-pitched nasal twang. But Music pundits declared Himesh as a junk singer. They branded his style of singing as irrational nasal one and predicted he won't survive beyond few years in bollywood where people worship their vocal cords. This controversy started when he won a Filmfare Award in 2005 for Best Male Playback Singer in his debut as a singer(for the title song of Aashiq Banaya Aapne). This song was a smash hit.

Do you feel the traditionally established group of playback singers would welcome a person who phenomenonly attained the status of star-singer apart from being a music composer? Does Himesh's style of singing produce flop songs ? Do junta seek any advice and suggestion where they themselves are mature enough to decide the fate of each artist's work?

Verdict is out: Himesh has produced largest number of HITS in recent year. His hit songs include Aashique Banaya Aapne, Jhalak Dikhlaja, Tera Suroor, Tera Mera Milna and many more. In bollywood where all singers sounding similar, Himesh maintained his distinct and original style of singing and exhibited determination and confidence under huge pressure of negative publicity. As an end user of the works of artists, Do we really want Himesh to stop singing in his original style and be another Sonu Nigam or Udit Narayan to please their critics? As a creative artist Himesh has only right to justify himself. A famous dialouge by Howard Roark, a brilliant young architect (The chief protagonist of novel The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand): He would choose to struggle in obscurity rather than compromise his artistic and personal vision by pandering to the prevailing taste in building design.

His tremendous success as singer in music album Aap Ka Suroor was only factor for his acting debut in Aap Ka Suroor - The Real Love Story. He is busy shooting for his next film-remake of KARZ. Don't you think, mimicking his style of handling the microphone and joking at trademark cap generated millions for TV channels and at the same time these shows keep Himesh in news all the time which is indirectly building his brand name? 1. When you google on some topic on Google, it displays a list of a million websites and related links. Does any body go beyond few pages to find relevant information before he tries another keyword for next search ? Does anybody bother about the quality of information on the 1,00,000th page ? Does it provide any link to navigate to any nth page of search result ? Does it worth to provide plethora of information where few precise links and information are enough ?
Does it provide useful information which is not found simply on any website? Everyone finds 99.99% of these 1 million search results as crap and useless. That's the primary reason that local flavored search engines like www.guruji.com, www.asklaila.com, www.justdial.com are hot start-ups in India. They cater to the specific needs of local people with precise information. As for, they provide city specific search and specific details of places people looking for like Chinese restaurant at sector 1, Kolkata. It would be quite interesting to watch how these local search engines take the giant by its horns.

2. Last year Yahoo! offered $1.4 billions to buy Facebook, a social networking site like Orkut. But founder of Facebook rejected this offer. The price tag was kool $2 billion. Google acquired a Chinese video sharing site YouTube for $1.2 billion. Does Facebook deserve such obscene amount of money ? Why didn't Yahoo! create a similar social networking site at the cost of few millions bucks as it has world class of programmers and designers and brand value to attract new users? Ok! later on Yahoo! got some sense not to go for next bid.
It's not doubt that these SNS (Social Networking Sites) and video sharing site are huge hit and are cyber hangouts for millions of users. Market valuation of these sites are huge primarily for millions of users and high site traffic. Do these two factors justify price in the range of billion of dollars ? Justification may be like...revenue through Ads or sharing the critical data with research firms of music industries to analyze trend in music and video preference among users.

I doubt the feasibility of the concept of revenue through Ads. I have put below the screen-shot of the analysis of its users by Orkut on various parameters. This pattern is similar for all SNS.

Maximum users are in the range of 18 to 25 yrs old. They log in to connect to friends, for chatting and some fun and they hardly bother to get some genuine information on any product.
have you ever looked for some product information on Orkut ? Most of the communities or discussion forums are related to their hobbies, film stars, films, school or college. For sake of visibility they can put Ads in such community forums but how many users are active members of community who can even view those Ads ? Once Google tried to put Ads on Orkut related to community topics but later on removed all Ads from it. One major concern is tremendous increase in fake profiles and porn stuffs. Just think...if site has 50% porn content and fake profiles then what kind of Ads it will put on such communities and profiles ? It will also dilute the brand value of site. YouTube contains 60% porn videos. In spite of the fact, acquisition of YouTube by Google highlights the mindless and ruthless competition to acquire the internet space to maintain superiority although it generates no revenue in near future. I wish...may be in near future they can figure out how to generate money from such sites.
